Group Admins

Introduction

An admin of a single Group must be a member of that Group. However, in related Groups it is advantageous to allow an admin of a parent Group to be an admin for child Groups without being a member of those Groups. If not:

  • Every child Group would appear in the admin's list of Groups. This could quickly become unweildy.
  • The admin would receive all blasts from all Groups.
  • A new admin in a parent Group would have to be added as a member to every child Group.

How It Works

An admin of a parent Group is also an admin for all child Groups lower in the hierarchy.

  • The admin may or may not be a member of any or all of these child Groups.
  • If not a member of a child Group the admin will not be included in child Group blasts and notifications.
  • If not a member the admin will still have access to all functionality in the child Group. For example, the admin can send blasts from the Group.
  • If added as a member of a child Group the admin will, of course, be an admin of the Group.

Note that this works top-down, not bottom-up.

  • An admin member of a parent Group is (per the above) an admin in the child Groups.
  • Admins and members of a child Group have rights in the parent Group determined strictly their position in the parent Group. For example, an admin of the child Group has public access only if not a member of the parent Group.
  • A non-admin member of a parent Group has access determined by their status in the child Group. For example, if this member is not a member of the child Group, then this person has public access only.
  • If an admin of a parent Group participates (e.g. posts a discussion topic or an announcement) in a child Group, access to that admin's Member Page and other information is determined by the above. You see what you're allowed to see in the parent Group depending on your status in that Group.
