FAQ: Using Families

Directra provides several ways to create, update and view families. Make sure that you have enabled families by checking the box Allow Family Relationships in the Setup section of the Settings tab.

When does Directra use auto-assign?

Whenever you add a member. You can add an individual member or you can use Add / Edit Multiple Members or the Roster to add several members at once.

Can I add a member and not use auto-assign?

Yes, but only when you add one member at a time. On the New Member form you'll see the Family drop-down list. You can create a new family, with this member as the sole family member (for now), add the member to another family in the list, or select No Family, in which case this member will never be automatically assigned to any family.

What if auto-assign makes a mistake? How can I undo or alter a family relationship? What if I want to add someone to a family whose last name is not the same as the family name?

Each member's page has a family section, just below the page photo. Edit the Family section. In particular, in the Family drop-down list select another family, create a new family or select No Family.

What if my Group has more than one family with the same last name?

You can create and/or edit familiy names. In this case, if you have two Smith families, you could rename them Smith 1 and Smith 2. But that's rather impersonal. So you might rename the families using the first name of a family member, e.g. the Phil Smith and Jeanette Smith families.

So, how to rename a family? On the Members tab select the Families view. Edit the family, changing the family name. To reassign members to this family, edit the Family section of each member's page, selecting the new family from the Family drop-down list.

How do I remove families that I'm no longer using?

From the Members tab select the Families view. Find the family you want to remove and click the delete icon delete.

If I uncheck "Allow Family Relationships", do I lose my existing families?

No. You can turn off family relationships by unchecking the Allow Family Relationships box mentioned at the top of this topic. All current family relationships are maintained but are not displayed or used in any way. However if you later want to re-enable families, check the box and your previous familiy relationships will be restored.
