Overview of Domains in Directra

Directra provides Internet-based tools to facilitate organization and communication for your Group. This means you can use your unique Directra domain to:

  • Create and display a web site for your Group. You control what information is available to any visitor to your Group's web site and what information is available only to Group members.
  • Route any emails sent to your domain to the correct recipients.

Obtaining a Domain

You have two choices:

  1. Directra assigns a unique subdomain name to each Group when the Group is created.
  2. You can use any domain registrar to purchase a domain name for your Group. The process takes only a few minutes, after which you can configure your domain to work with Directra. Typically it costs about $10 per year to maintain your own domain.

If you have your own domain it's easy to configure Directra to handle all DNS functions (web site, email routing) for your Group.

Notes
  1. You do not need to have your own domain name to use Directra. You have complete flexibility here. If you have a domain you can use Directra to manage information for this domain, but this is not required, as Directra always assigns a subdomain for your Group.
  2. Directra assigns your subdomain name based on the short name for your Group. You can change this using the Domain Names panel on the Group Settings Page. Change the subdomain name to whatever you like, and as long as it is unique (i.e. it is not being used by another Group) Directra will make the change.
  3. How to decide which option to use? If your Group will be active for a limited time (e.g. a team that will play for a single season only) it probably doesn't make sense to purchase your own domain. But if your Group will last for some time, or you want to provide a web site for your Group that goes beyond the scope of what you can do with Directra, then you will want to purchase your own domain.

Using Your Domain

Directra provides web pages and email routing for your Group, all based on your domain.

  1. Your public web page is found at http://yourdomain.directra.com, viewable by anyone. From this page users can log into your Group's private web site. If you have your own domain name, you can configure this domain so that http:www.yourdomain.com will open your Directra public page. As an alternative, if you maintain a separate web site for your domain you can link to your Directra pages from this site.  Learn more ...
  2. Directra will route email sent to address@yourdomaiin.directra.com. If you have your own domain your can configure it so that Directra will handle all email routing for this domain. Learn more ...
